A Call for a Reporting Policy on Sexual Abuse in the Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Church has certainly been affected by such scandals, as the headlines of national newspapers and Internet websites will attest. The National Herald reported recently that that "the Holy Synod [of the Orthodox Church] is preparing to discuss old sexual scandals that have reemerged, according to high-ranking ecclesiastical officials at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Individuals have already contacted the archdiocese asking for monetary compensation in [the] millions of dollars."

When Father Goran Arsic was finally asked to testify before a commission investigating allegations that a bishop had sexually abused children, he had high hopes the church would confront the scandal head-on.

Until now, even the existence of the specially-convened commission, let alone its findings, has remained a closely-guarded secret. That the commission was led by the recently-enthroned Patriarch has also been kept from the public.

It is time for the church family to bring sexual abuses out of the closet, to face this problem, and to move forward rebuilding the shattered image of the family of God when such abuses occur. Overt sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, molestation, incest all happen in the Orthodox Church.

Orthodox Church two-faced on sex scandals

The police broke up a pimping ring in Bucharest in early July that was offering underage rent boys. Investigations by the daily Adevărul have revealed that a priest from the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bucharest was allegedly involved in the scandal. The newspaper writes that the Orthodox Church should look to the Catholic Church as an example: "Allegations of sex scandals within the Church are either rejected or completely ignored. ... This is a two-faced discourse: during the day, cloaked in their cassocks the priests demonize homosexuality, in the evenings they practice 'this activity' that they themselves have condemned. ...

Sam Hodges reports that a lawsuit alleging child sex abuse by Nicholas Katinas, former pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in North Dallas, is headed for an out-of-court settlement.

The amount of the settlement is confidential
.

Katinas was pastor of Holy Trinity, a key institution of the Dallas Greek community, for 28 years until his retirement in 2006.
