MANILA, Philippines - No ransom.
On this note, Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan put his foot down Friday on the reported demand of the Abu Sayyaf for ransom in exchange for the release of Red Cross worker Eugenio Vagni.
"Tayo, di natin pinaguusapan ang ransom. Wala tayong bibigyang ransom... Kung ransom ang paguusapan walang katapusan ang problema natin, kaya di tayo magbibigay kahit singko [We are not talking ransom here. And we will not give ransom, lest it perpetuate our problem. We will not give them even a fraction of a centavo]," Tan said in an interview on dzXL radio.
As Sulu governor, Tan heads the local crisis committee addressing the problem.
He warned the Abu Sayyaf they face bigger problems if they kill Vagni.
"Konsensya nila yan kung papatayin nila, depende sa kanila yan ... Kung papatayin nila, lalaki ang kanilang kaso [It will be on their conscience. If they kill Vagni, they face bigger problems]," he said.
On Thursday, Philippine National Red Cross chairman Sen. Richard Gordon cited information reaching him indicating the Abu Sayyaf
wants ransom for Vagni.
The Abu Sayyaf abducted Vagni and fellow Red Cross workers Mary Jean Lacaba and Andreas Notter in Sulu last Jan. 15. They released Lacaba
April 2, and Notter
April 18.
For his part, Philippine Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said that while they are open to “talks" for Vagni’s release, the military is not keen on suspending its operations.
"Kung magkakaroon ng pagusap para siya ay mapalaya tayo sumasangayon na mabigyang daan without having to sinasabing go back to square one [If there will be talks, we are open to giving concessions but not to the point of going back to square one]," he said in a separate
interview on dzXL.
He said that even if negotiations will be conducted, military operations such as intelligence gathering should continue and the military should not be made to back out of their present positions.
On Thursday, Arevalo said the military was
opposed to any ransom payment in exchange for the release of Vagni.
